what do we need to read or know or learn before ordaining in a thai forest monastery? for example what teachings or skills outside this context are worth studying first?

I would recommend - and suspect it is a minimum condition of entry - that you take at least a several month retreat within the tradition - whilst you are doing this you can discuss ordination with the Bikkhus and Abbott.

Beyond that I do not know specifics but I think with google and a telephone you could get some more precise information.

Very good recommendation Morning Dew. This is what most people forget about the Buddha's path. It was his path and can give us some pointers but we all have to follow the way for ourselves. When you strip the Buddha's path down of the cultural agglomerations it has gathered over the years you come to exactly what Krishnamurti is writing of.

Warmly,

Matthew
