Does Mind of Buddha wander while he was not meditating
« on: May 29, 2008, 09:35:57 AM »
When users doing meditation go to work, gossip etc, their mind is wandering. They are talking about things where their mind is wandering, and mind  is wandering near to things that they are talking. Did Buddha after attaining nirvana , was his mind wandering, or wandering actively under his control on what is the right thing to speak?

Just curious... please write in laymans language.. as I am a beginner.

Thanks,
Vipassana Beginner.

Buddhamind is meditation mind. There is no such thing as a Buddha who is not meditating. In this sense meditation is better described as a state of mind - and not something you do on a cushion with your legs crossed. Of course we "practice" on the cushion with our legs crossed because containing the physical body and mind in meditation practice this way actually offers us a chance to attain Buddhamind effectively.

When you achieve the ultimate state of permanent meditation you are Buddha. There will still be thoughts but there won't be any of the habituated wandering mind that afflicts us all - because the root poisons that lead to this mind of greed, hatred and ignorance have been overcome and the Samadhi or "one-pointedness" of a fully concentrated mind is established with no cracks.

Do let me know if there is any of that which is not layman enough or something not clear. I will try harder to express the point again.

In the Dhamma,

Crystal Clear..  ;D for the layman, me. Your answer is packed with pure love and intention to help everyone, I am impressed and felt good reading your answer, which led to below question.

Again curious, Does a non mediating person be able to make out the difference between selfless service and selfish service, if both are very good? I got served in the mediation course where he helped me by waking me up. I found it better than the service I have got at a five star hotel. Earlier, before I started my meditation (I am at a very basic level) I didn't find that  difference between both or may be, I would be thinking that Five start hotel service is better. When I mean five star service means, the person is serving me for himself, to get a better tip.

My mind is still wandering.. ::) with curiosity

Thank you,
Vipassana Beginner

Until ego is blasted away by direct realisation of truth there is always some self-serving in serving of others.

Yep, I have cut down the major ego in me, quite a lot, but to break it completely its a million times difficult  :o. Earlier, I didn't even know I had ego  :) . Fear hasn't reduced to any extent, may have to practice more.

One idea came to my mind, we can make industries should give 10 day leave, then I can work and compensate on earlier or following weekends and practice a second course. This will benefit all :)

Vipassana Beginner,

As to your origional question, I think that the buddhas mind did not wander, or at least he didn't get caught up in his thoughts. They didn't control him anymore. I think that's part of what liberation is.

Agreed...

I wonder if He even had mind chatter at all...

No he didn't.

A mind "established in absolute Samadhi" has no mind chatter. Nirbana is about fourteen stops further down the line after a change of trains.

With no unfinished business from the past and no worries about the non-existent future and the conquering of ignorance, desire and ill-will, what is there for the mind to chatter about?

Very true..

Is the concept of "unfinished business" present in buddhism??

If so.. I must start approaching life differently!!

One pointedness is a result of training the mind through meditation. As the mind calms, awareness increases and focus strengthens. One day if you are lucky and work diligently to gain true insight, true calm, then you will arrive at a point where there is only the object of meditation and no distraction. Then the mind can be focussed on any object without distractions arising.

It feels very liberating and powerful, because it is.

Does it mean that when you are in one pointedness, there will no longer be chatter, the mind doesnt wander off? I am just wondering how it it like in one pointedness......because i am not sure if what i am going through during meditation is the "correct" path......thanks.......

No wandering off. But don't think about this stuff too much. You turn meditation into a thinking, conceptualised thing it becomes "egotised" - much like the way capitalism sucks everything in, the ego can too. Sitting is the medicine for this condition.
