Rob Burbea and Piti for Jhana
« on: February 04, 2021, 04:30:52 AM »
I've been listening to Rob Burbea's Practicing the Jhana series on Dharma Seed. Does anyone know if anyone has taken over to teach his way?

I have a question about piti. Whilst doing metta I put on a small smile which generates a nice feeling. I feel it easier to imagine happiness for people rather than love. The pleasant sensation is face based due to the smile. I don't really know if this is pitti or just a natural reaction to smiling. Is there a problem with generating happiness instead of love? Would love and happiness have a different flavor/texture or shouldn't I worry about that for now and just consider it 2 words for a similar feeling.

I really like Ron's teaching style. Such a shame I found out about him too late.

Yes, you shouldn't worry about them now. Because whatever you think it is it might be based on wrong understanding.

Rob was a good teacher, much loved locally. I was asked for some advice from friends helping him regarding using Vitamin D for help with cancer, though I don't know if it was acted upon.

If you are generating positive feelings and intention towards others Nick, this is a good practice. A smile is no bad thing .. the mind often follows the body and so I feel this is as valid a way as any to help establish feelings of kindness or compassion.
