Awakening Loving-Kindness by Pema Chodron

This little book is an abridged version of The Wisdom of No Escape and includes the meditation instruction and some dharma to help along the way. In this book she teaches a meditation where you only follow the outbreath. While it is a little different than shamatha, I think this method really captures the kernel of mindfulness and as such I think it is excellent for someone beginning to meditate, and can be an interesting experienced for a practiced meditator as well.

Ani Pema also discusses at length the importance of maitri, (loving-kindness) especially towards oneself, which I think is easy to forget and often when we act out of ego-attachment, it is often out of feeling a lack of self-love.

Some of the reviews say it is too tiny and can be difficult to read, so the Kindle version might be better for some.
