why is staying present so hard? any tips
« on: July 23, 2015, 09:12:01 PM »
Why do o struggle so hard to stay present. I remember countless times throughout the day but I always seem to loose its grasp. Does it come with practice? Any tips welcome.

Thanks

It's difficult because we always want something else, besides what's right here right now.

Either we crave something we want, or we want to get something we don't have.

You can see this manifested as boredom, restlessness etc and these are just manifestations of craving, aversion, and delusion.

The only way to fix it is to keep coming back over and over again, train yourself not to follow the impulses that lead you away from the present.

yes, practice. Lots. The reason you can't stay present is that you can't silence your mind.

Try this: Try not thinking of anything for 5 seconds. Then try 10 seconds. Then 15. And get longer and longer. I did better at this when walking my dogs because I would still be counting or thinking of how long I am not thinking. This is called 'No-mind' by Alan Shaw who wrote "Creating A Bug Free mind" BTW...

So if you go out walking your dog or alone or whatever, just pick out a landmark ahead-a stop sign, someone's house, whatever and just walk that distance(shorter distances at first) and just admire the scenery. Just be aware of what's around you and that's it. Don't think or anything just be aware and enjoy 'the moment'.

You will get better, I promise.

Cheers and Namaste.
