Relaxation/Effort
« on: December 05, 2014, 08:19:14 PM »
Life is really backing up what Matthew says about the importance of relaxation for me right now.  I've been introduced to a method called Feldenkrais that teaches the brain more efficient ways of moving and can make a huge difference for flexibility/pain etc.  I caused myself huge problems initially by approaching it like I do everything (thinking more effort = better) and it was such a huge learning experience.

The premise of it is that the least effort is the most powerful, because then the brain finds more efficient/effective ways of moving.  Feldenkrais gives me real time feedback in the form of my body: for example my flexibility with turning has improved about 500% in one week, and I've never had anything like that sort of improvement in flexibility with stretching and yoga etc.  I think this has huge applicability to our meditation practice:  less effort = more awareness.   It's also helping me realise more and more how much tension I hold, particularly in my neck, shoulders, jaw and face, so is translating to more awareness when I sit, and more relaxation due to that awareness.

I'm thrilled to have discovered it and feel it's a wonderful practice alongside of meditation.  The lessons are called "Awareness through Movement" - the perfect adjunct to sitting.   :)

(Note if anyone is inspired to check it out, make sure you learn from a good teacher, one who really helps understanding relaxation. There's a fabulous example of an Awareness through Movement class on youtube, called "The Feldenkrais Method Better Turning" (in two parts) that teaches the important foundations.)

I used to practice Feldenkrais  about 15 years ago and always wanted to find time to get back to it.

You are right it's an excellent way to develop mindfulness, and physical wellbeing.  I think if you try Yoga with a Feldenkrais  attitude now emphasising mindfulness and exploring to find the most efficient way to move it will be a different experience.

Yup that's exactly what I'm finding, it's really cool.  :)

Thank you betty, much as banging my head against the wall in this regard seems at times pointless (and at other times very important) it is good to know that once in a while it makes a difference to an individual.

Two of the core members of this community started off in the Goenka tradition and have both moderated their practice having explored these ideas such that neither would strictly identify with that school and one would categorically deny that it has any validity.

As I posted in the "Relaxation is the key" thread, the antidote to stress is aware relaxation or relaxed awareness. I'm glad to hear it is showing fruits for you.

x

Matthew
