Understanding Buddhism - Perry Schmidt-Leukel
« on: July 21, 2014, 01:03:21 AM »
I highly recommend this book to all but especially to those newly introduced to the path. After reading multiple other authors, what this book offers and where others fall short is this lacks conviction to one or other school of thought because the author isn't Buddhist. The author illustrates the intellectual climate out of which which the Buddha arose and proceeds to put Buddhist concepts into that framework.
It pulls a lot directly from the Pali Canon and he does a good job of being as objective as possible. If you seek to understand many Buddhist concepts from as complete a view as possible in 170 pages,  you need this one. Nothing else I've read really comes close.
