Take it one step at a time. Learn to follow the breath such that there is not too much effort involved: so that there is a balance between attentiveness and relaxation that is easily maintained. This is not going to happen overnight - depending upon your starting point and personal make up it can take days to months. Once you have gained the experiential knowledge of doing this your mind will already be less inclined to grasping/grabbing and you'll actually know for yourself how it feels to progressively relax and let go without losing focus.
