Why does paying attention to the present moment, and feeling the sensations that are there so efficient in decreasing anxiety? WHY is the reason that meditation works? What is the science behind it?

A lot of anxiety stems from fears of the future or torments of the past. By not focusing on those, you should become less anxious.

One thing I have become more aware of in regards to my own anxiety/depression issues is sometimes the actually ill feeling in my body and mind can be there without much thought, and then my mind will cherry pick out negative/anxious thoughts to fuel those ill feelings and make them worse. By letting go and being present overall my body and mind feel more relaxed, making me less likely to pick out ill thoughts.

So there's two things going on, you're altering your cognitive processes away from the negative, and also calming your body and removing tension.

You begin to look upon yourself as if you were a newspaper photograph. When viewed with the naked eyes, the photograph you see is a definite image. When viewed through a magnifying glass, it all breaks down into an intricate configuration of dots.
