Meditation vs Relaxation

What's the difference between these two? How do you know you're not actually doing "relaxation" when you think you are meditating? What if the benefits we get from meditation are actually just simply "relaxation"?

For me meditation(observing impermanence of bodily sensations) is a way of trancending thought(past and future) and moving closer to absolute presence.

This practice leads to insights into the mind matter phenomenon which in turn liberate one from stress and anxiety and allow one to relax, but they also lead to greater compassion and unconditional love for all living beings.

Relaxation is linked to right effort and has benefit, but this is only one part of the path.

Most of the time when we meditate we end up with our bodies being physically relaxed and mind also relaxed. But not always..  Sometimes meditation will also leave us restless and in discomfort.. its never the same result.

If results of meditation are only a relaxed state then we are only getting the very initial benefits but yes we are on the right path.. compassion, feeling of interconnectedness, being grounded and being mindful are some other side benefits of meditation..
