Sleepiness and meditation

I am an American and I have the work/life and sleep schedule that goes with it Sometimes, I just do not get enough sleep and I don't really have time for naps since I come home so late. Is it ok to meditate if sleepy? I know that meditation is best done when fully awake and alert but it is hard to do that unless its a weekend.

It`s not ideal unless you can maintain awareness alive and not slip into drowsiness. It would be great to tweak your schedule just a bit; if you sit for say 45 minutes don`t do it while tired before bedtime, instead go to sleep 45 minutes earlier, get up 45 minutes earlier, do your whole morning routine first to wake you up completely, then just before leaving to work sit for 45 minutes.

Also you can add little bits of practice during the workday that can help, like paying attention to the sensations in your feet and legs when walking, or sit for a few minutes during break or when there`s no activity.
