¨checking¨ all the time
« on: January 19, 2012, 09:00:39 AM »
I have this tendency that whenever I am trying to meditate, I am constantly ´checking´ whether I am already meditating. Obviously that is not the case, because of the checking itself. Then I get annoyed by it and that makes it worse, so I end up thinking ´Why bother trying´ because I only seem to get further from the path.

Anyone has any suggestions on how to deal with this?

As with all other distractions, I would suggest to treat this tendency as one too. The crucial point is, whenever you find yourself doing the checking, you should not beat yourself up. That will only create even more distraction. Just accept the fact that in this moment, a tendency to check has sprung up. Just watch what is happening. Then gently get back to your object of meditation. Eventually, just like all tendencies, this one will also die out.
Let's go beyond this illusion, shall we?

I would suggest you understand that meditation is not an act but a state of mind. Mindfulness is actually a better word and the Pali is synonymous with remembering too.

Your other thread I have offered some more insights.
