During an evening sit last week I heard great chatter coming from the bottom floor of my house, me being on the 3rd floor. A representative/fundraiser for a dog safety organization was at the door. What with my room-mate being naturally excited and out-going and the representative really pushing for donations, they talked and argued for about 20 minutes. Eventually they guy was in the living room drinking tea, the conversation changing from the inhumane slaughter of dogs to more general stuff like wages and blowjobs. I stuck my sit out for an hour and went downstairs, the man delighted to see another potential donator! I couldn't help this time round. My room-mate asked what I was up to and I told him I was meditating, he replied "Oh God, I'm sorry, hope we didn't wake you." I thought it was rather funny, maybe you will too.

Jewish Buddhism...

If there is no self,
whose arthritis is this?

Be here now.
Be someplace else later.
Is that so complicated?

Drink tea and nourish life.
With the first sip, joy.
With the second, satisfaction.
With the third, peace.
With the fourth, a Danish.

Wherever you go, there you are.
Your luggage is another story.

Accept misfortune as a blessing.
Do not wish for perfect health,
or a life without problems.
What would you talk about?

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a
single "oy."

There is no escaping karma.
In a previous life, you never called,
you never wrote, you never visited.
And whose fault was that?

Zen is not easy.
It takes effort to attain nothingness.
And then what do you have?
Bupkes.

The Tao does not speak.
The Tao does not blame.
The Tao does not take sides.
The Tao has no expectations.
The Tao demands nothing of others.
The Tao is not Jewish.

Breathe in. Breathe out.
Breathe in. Breathe out.
Forget this and attaining Enlightenment will be
the least of your problems.

Let your mind be as a floating cloud.
Let your stillness be as the wooded glen.
And sit up straight.
You'll never meet the Buddha with such rounded
shoulders.

Be patient and achieve all things.
Be impatient and achieve all things faster.

To Find the Buddha, look within.
Deep inside you are ten thousand flowers.
Each flower blossoms ten thousand times.
Each blossom has ten thousand petals.
You might want to see a specialist.

To practice Zen and the art of Jewish
motorcycle maintenance,
do the following: Get rid of the
motorcycle.
What were you thinking?

Be aware of your body.
Be aware of your perceptions.
Keep in mind that not every physical sensation
is a symptom of a
terminal illness.

The Torah says, "Love thy neighbor as thyself."
The Buddha says there is no "self." So, maybe
you are off the hook.

The everlasting cabbage?
« Reply #138 on: February 09, 2014, 05:43:51 AM »
I bought this cabbage in early December. The "best before" date was December 14th. I was pretty ill for the whole month and didn't cook much but I did have the odd bacon and cabbage sandwich.

When I revisited the fridge in January it was still alive and well ... in fact it had started growing roots :)

So a few leaves went in a casserole here and a salad there .... finally yesterday decided I'm going to try and plant it, so I've put it in some water to encourage root growth (doing well). Not sure where I will plant it .. maybe in a pot inside the house .. and no idea what it will do with itself but hey, this cabbage has guts man ...

Not bad considering it was meant to be eaten 57 days ago :D

Cabbage of course! (It tastes good).

... And my fridge seems to be at a temperature where it was in some kind of homoeostasis. The leaves were just starting to get a bit floppy but now it's new roots have been in water for 24hrs it's fresh as fresh again :)

Well, the cabbage is doing well considering it was labeled best before December. It's crowding out the daffodils I planted it with, the leaves are growing and it is going to seed, which is what it ought to do at this stage in its life. Not sure if I'm going to harvest and start eating it again or try and harvest the seed. Probably going to eat it as I'm not sure if it can self-seed and the daffodils need some space.

:) It is ... and back in the kitchen now as it really was taking all the goodness from the soil - and the daffodils were failing to grow. So the cabbage has been uprooted and will be eaten again (this cabbage from the supermarket was supposed to be eaten by 14th December :D )

The cabbage was planted with root stems 4mm long four weeks ago this is the root system it had grown in that time, the longest intact root I extracted was ~ 20cm:

Haha that reminds me of a lecturer at the university who came into a meditation class late, flustered, red in the face and practically shouted at me, "You've got to teach me how to relax!"

Took four weeks but we got there :)
