Awesome link Matthew, I had always seen the fire metaphor as disturbing, but that is really beautiful to see it is at rest, not extinguished as in dead!

Andy,

It is easy to fall into Nihilism and best not to. :)

Agreed. :) I'm going to go home and give that link another good reading. It always so nice to get historical and cultural perspectives on what has been said 2500 years ago. That link is gold.

Thanks Andy, have to bookmark that one!

No one answered Rob's final question:

Does anyone have an example of the 'ego in action'?

My answer would be: "Yes, ^ that and this. ;)

Hi Andy  - I went and looked at that site, it appears to contain excerpts from Thanissaro Bikkhu's work, who is one of the main contributors to the Access to Insight site. If you're interested in more of his writing, and also the excellent Bikkhu Bodhi, have a look at http://www.accesstoinsight.org.  In particular, have a look at Thanissaro Bikkhu's Mind like Fire Unbound and Bikkhu Bodhi's A Buddhist Response to Contemporary Dilemmas of Human Existence .

Cheers bloke! I'm glad I asked about all this, I was very hazy on what was meant by ego in the buddhist context. I've been able to 'watch it' now I know what I'm looking at.

The identification with thought habits has been the easiest.
