Author Topic: What are the benefits of mantra meditation vs. vipassana meditation?  (Read 5342 times)

Hi there

What are some of the benefits of mantra meditation (Transcendental meditation) as opposed to Mindfulness meditation?

The reason I ask for this, is that I may have to switch to mantra meditation, as mindfulness meditation is somehow causing me to sleep only 3-4 hours per night, as described in my previous thread. I just feel so awake all day  :o :o

Anyways, the benefits of mindfulness/vipassana meditation are in my own experience:
- Significantly decreased anxiety/nervousness
- A feeling of bliss, happiness
- A surge of energy after meditation. Sometimes lasting the entire day (and night, gha..)
- A decrease in feelings of irritation, aggression, impatience etc.
- Less need for structure, planning and preparation

Does anyone have experience with mantra meditation, and know the benefits of this kind of meditation?

It is another, but much less effective, form of Shamatha meditation. I suggest you ride out the practice and see where it takes you.

Goenka talks about mantra meditation in his discourses on the 10-day course. 

He says that mantra meditation is effective to relax you, but vipassana aimed to make a deep surgery to your mind to bring about change at the root level to permanently end suffering.

Different forms of meditation can be mutually beneficial, so there is no need to make choices between them, but to find a good balance.
