This book consists of condensed versions of all the evening discourses from a ten day meditation retreat in the [amazonsearch]Goenka[/amazonsearch] tradition. If you like the down to Earth, not overly theoretical approach to meditation, you will probably find Goenka's rethorical style accessible. Also, if you do not have the ability to attend a retreat for whatever reason, reading this is probably the second best thing.

Ah, that is a great book! Also translated in several languages (german, ...), and it is of great help for those who did a Goenka - course. But it is not a "do-it-yourself" - book, it won't be a compensation for doing the course.
The discourses are also available on CD's - that's even better than the book, because the CD's are unexpurgated:
