"The Power of NOW" by Eckhart Tolle

[amazonsearch]The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle[/amazonsearch]

The precious book tries to pull the reader into the land of no-mind while the reader is busy reading.  The book does not attempt to introduce new beliefs, thoughts or concepts but aims bring instantaneous consciousness.  Simple and comprehensive.....what could be a better expression!

If you are analytical and prefer to read lengthy stuff, u can go for "A New Earth" by Eckhart Tolle.

Hi guys, I'm new to this sight,
A great little accompaniment to this book is called practising the power of now.
I know it sounds overload ( a book about a book?) but gives good practical tips on achieving the being in the now, also known as mindfulness.

Chubachopsger,

Welcome to the forums.

Tolle's work has value, however, if you have seen him interviewed it is clear he is highly egotistical about it all and has missed some basics.

I trust you will gain here that which you need.

Kind regards,

Matthew

Hi Matthew,
Thanks for welcoming me to these Forums.
Fortunately or unfortunately? I haven't seen Tolle in interview.
But I did think of an old saying, "don't shoot the messenger".
It's still a powerful message (no pun intended).

Hey Chubachopsger, (Cool name by the way)

I would be interested to hear about how you have put into practice this accompaniment book, sounds interesting. Personally I enjoyed Power of Now, especially his concept of 'Psychological time', very useful concept.

feel free to share , we won't bite...much  :D

Hi Andrew,
The name chubachopsger has been thrust upon me by my good wife chubachopslady, email names, believe it or not she tried to get chubachopsgent and someone already had it! What's the chances?
But back to the power of now and the practising of. Now both the books PON and practising the PON are very similar, as in they cover the exact same subject matter, but where they differ I feel, is in the PON Tolle discusses and proves quite well the worth of this concept.
Whereas in practising the PON it it is almost an edited version which makes it a very handy book to have, as I feel the meaty parts of the PON are a lot more accessible and easier to read in this book.
Useful part of the book for me in the second book is how he explains the the idea of fear and worry only (outside of imminent physical danger) happen when the mind is dwelling in the past or looking to the future.
This was a big leap for me internally, as Tolle explains quite well that we won't be able deal with this in the thinking mind(storyteller)ego), so the importance of mindfullness and meditation really hit home. We may think we have it in the thinking mind, but you can't solve the problem with the mind that is the problem?
If you liked the PON get a hold of a little book called the voice of knowledge by Don Miguel Ruiz, I have a quote from this book on the front of my diary.

"I have been living in a story of my own creation my entire life without noticing"

Anyways Andrew I could discuss all day, i'm not sure what part of the forum you can have ongoing banter about such things, as I'm obviously a newby..
So if you would like to discuss more I'd love to hear your thoughts too.
Regards
Chubachopsger..

Cool. We can banter in here about the book I'm sure, we are talking about the topic, so what better place?

Yes that 'story', I know it well! it is a real revelation to find that there is more (or less?) to me than a history and collection of thoughts/feelings. Not that we ever would have though about it like that, but when you look at it, there it is. One thought of the past, one of the future a couple of feelings and this makes up 'me'.

mindfulness and meditation are the key though, they open up the experience of now for sure.

Feel free to post  about the book if you feel to, or if you want to have a more wide ranging discussion, maybe start a thread in Under the Banyan Tree category, we generally banter away in there about all sorts of things.

I didn't like the book by ET that i tried to read. I vaguley think it was the power of now. It started off well when he was writing about pre-existing theories. But when he moved into his own ideas, well i thought he got quite loopy and definitely not my cup of tea. I had to put the book down.

Cilla,

Perhaps this was the issue:

Although I don't think it deserves a separate thread, I do want to add that I followed this book up with "Practicing the Power of Now" and I'd strongly recommend you save your money. The book is 90% rehashed material from "The Power of Now" plus a 5-minute entry level explanation of vipassana. I like Tolle's stuff, I think it's very accessible (if a little nebulous at times) for Western audiences. But the follow-up book is rather disappointing and, frankly, seems to have been published purely for generating some extra cash flow thanks to the strength of TPON.
