Meditation book for someone who needs it, but doesn't know it!
« on: Thursday 07 April 2011, 05:24 AM »
Hi  All,

My hiatus from posting is going well, though I still check in to read now and then, I find the compulsion to stay online is lessened if I'm not posting. Not ideal, I wish I could moderate myself, but, heh, I'll take what I can get!

Anyway, my question is for book recommendations for my brother and his wife. They have just had a daughter, and she is not well. (reflux). I really believe it is their stressful attitude to life which is causing the child's suffering and I'm compelled to do something about it. I have spoken with him, and as you can imagine, he was not impressed with my opinion to say the least. But hey, I have to call it as I see it. No one said the truth was going to make us happy, just free.

Regardless of his reaction, I want to back it up  with a gift of a good book. Because I learnt Calm-Abiding here, on this forum, and they are not vaguely interested in learning anything yet, it isn't an option at this stage. I figure a book is my best bet of getting through to them.

Does any good books come to mind? Something non-religous yet spiritual would be best, they are not on any 'path' that I can see. Completely 'asleep', in a spiritual sense.

love

Hi Andy good to see you my friend :)
Im happy to read you have found the balance, good man.

I can warmly recomand J. Krishnamurtis book;
http://www.messagefrommasters.com/Ebooks/Jiddu-Krishnamurti-Books/Freedom_from_the_Known.pdf

This book set a certain perspectivr in place for me but without calm-abiding it has not much power to change but like any intelectualy enquired knowledge tends to create more confusion and restlesness. Nothing can replace the actual practice.

That said i am off to meditate now :)

I too am moderating my forum activity.

Hello Andy, Its great to see you smiling here.
My suggestion would be this http://www.amazon.com/Power-Now-Guide-Spiritual-Enlightenment/dp/1577311523
My thought here is, it has had a great deal of popular support, so it might be easy for them to open.
Be well, blessings,

Thanks DE,

I'm actually reading that one right now! Awesome book.

I've found this one,

http://www.amazon.com/Minute-Meditation-Quiet-Mind-Change/dp/0399529950/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1302225938&sr=1-1

I don't know if it teaches calm-abiding as such, but 8 mins should get it in the door at least.

Hey, I like your picture you posted when I made a break for it; It is you right? I like the stone you have balance on your head, I don't know what it means but it spoke to me anyway!!

good to see you,

love

Andy,
That is me (I figured I'd sneak it in when everyone turned their backs.)
It is a stone from the beach (Limantour Spit at Point Reyes,) and it is now in my front yard. (the ultimate consumerism!)

I was just looking at the book you mentioned; it looks very good.

I appreciate you Andy.
Peace and warm blessings,
DE
